letter to encourage a young man

Shame? Don't inject it into your consciousness. Not at this stage of your life, Joel. It will hamper your growth. Everything in you has to come out, and the further you move into your twenties the more will come. You will find that everything you were ever taught will come before you one at a time, and you will test them against the times you live in, and what you need to be a man in the 21st century. Some will work for you and others will not.

What does not work you chuck into the trash, and the rest you modify into a process. The process? It is yours. It doesn't belong to your parents, or grandparents. It belongs to you. Isn't that fascinating, and much easier than self-condemnation? You were born into a mysterious process by a unique set of parents who gifted you with something special for these times, and these times are not for us old heads. Our job is to facilitate your growth process!

Elders, true elders, not people who just got old who are dumber than buffalo shit, but Elders who trained their spirits to assist growth processes are alive to help young people. Seek them out. Search the minds and spirits of your parents. It is their love, grit, and tenacity that got you here, and your growing up changes them just as much as you are changing before their eyes. Growth processes. These are all growth processes.

That is all and there is more, Joel. Ain’t that cool? – Uncle Greg
