ICE-T's wife

Rapper Ice-T's marriage fascinates me, and I pay attention to the transformation of the man and the image and how his wife, Coco, transformed to transform her man into a husband for over a decade, if my sources are correct. Back in the days when Ice-T was screaming wildly into the living room of millions of families about Fuck the Police, and the whole gangsta lifestyle I was molding my children, and on the streets, for a season, as a law enforcement officer. The whole ideology of the gangster life in already depressed neighborhoods compounded the problem of enforcement, and rendered enlightenment a seemingly impossible possibility, and terrified people within and outside of that community of belief and low expectations.

Ice-T stood for everything I was against, but he held his own with a deeply thought out theology, and philosophy I had to listen carefully to because the young people were listening to every word, and applying every idea, and taking on the spirit of the messages without shame, or discussion, at times, with their families.  He was a pimp right off the gutter. I heard him once say, "Every man needs three women. One to marry, a girlfriend, and one to fuck."

A lot of cats applaud this.

He appeared in a documentary about the street life of working prostitutes. It was a gritty testament to the gore, the rigor, and the raw life they lead. Ice-T appeared near the end in a ball annually given to award pimps from across the country with the honor of being acknowledged, and crowned as Pimp of the Year. Pimps show up dressed to the nine in colors, hats, and coats at the extreme end of the fashion world all the way down into the soul colors of the gutters and streets they come from and reign in their quest to be admired. They show up with their whores on their arms in diamonds, and colors, and more provocative than on the streets as working girls. Here, they are the showcased items on display no other pimp should be able to take from another. It happens and how it could happen is explained by the men themselves on camera.

Ice-T had left Hollywood to make an appearance and give credibility to this function at the same time affirming and confirming his street credibility at the ball. It's a double entrapment, I know for sure, but that's the way it is. Against that his career kept going in the legitimate world of business and film. Something modified his persona  His image became appealing and less threatening. His language took on a more approachable feeling, and his roles on TV had him with short hair and long speaking parts as a respected co-actor, or a lead, at times.

Gossip and reality shows will not get the whole of how and why Ice-T transformed into a husband to a sexy and provocative woman with her own past. Perhaps the two of them lived as they lived to find each other and become lovers and mates. I don't know, but I do know the legacy of words he has left in his life has footprints from thousands and thousands of boys and families suffering from the natural consequences embodying those words and images. How is atonement possible? Again, I don't know. I can't answer that, but I can assume that those who followed Ice-T's leading have one choice if they want to live: unlearn. If they want to live they must unlearn all they know for starters. © Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories 1.25.13
