Hard boiled Southern white women have a deserved place in American history because of what they endured! The fact and the way they had to readjust their estimation of a man at the end of the Civil War with all of the broken men returning home, and the hovering and disrespectful presence of Union troops making worse the aftermath of deep disappointment, white women had to change, shouldering a lot. How it has shaped the country and fueled vigor and power into the power Southern whites hold presently, goes largely ignored because of their women's tough, no nonsense approach and way of loving in spite of, or because of what made their men feel some strength; as the world changed too quickly for them and their sense of the world and their place within it.

What would the South be if American culture had within it a true understanding of healing, and knew how to listen to the pain they have caused? None of these things became clear to me until I listened to what women did not say. - Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories 6/15/17
